NFL Draft RulesSome people may ask, What is the NFL Draft? With the passing of the years, this term has been known worldwide increasingly. The NFL Draft officially named NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting is an event held every year, in order the National Football League (NFL) may choose some amateur players who have graduated, and choose some players for the first time for American Football. This event has been popularized and now is followed by all media. In this event the 32 National Football League teams recruit new players (usually NCAA players), but for this, school players should have been at least three years out of high school. With the current system used, the tournament or Draft have 7 rounds, the number of players who are selected may vary, for example, is worth mentioning that in 2008 were selected 255 players. Many times, due to the long time required for a player to enter in classification of eligible, NFL teams can be filled with seniors and juniors. When a player wants to apply to be part of the project, he must apply on a given date, usually it's after 15 January, and if the player is allowed as part of the project, he will not be eligible for college. Eligibility: If a college player, wants to be elected by the NFL, he must comply with a period of Eligibility, which usually covers four years of roster time, plus an optional fifth year red shirt. For players, there is a possibility of leaving college early, provided they have complied with the rule of being out of school for 3 years. For the first time in recent years, the first day of the draft will have only two rounds instead of three. The last five rounds of the draft along with the compensatory picks will take place on the second day. Draft timing When the first round of draft begin, the teams have within 10 minutes to make their selection. In previous years the estimated time was 15 minutes, however, it was reduced to the satisfaction of the TV watchers, because in total, the number of minutes consumed in this round could be many, for example: in 2007 the duration were 6 hours. Once the second round start (and will continue until the seventh) the duration is within 5 minutes. If a team consumed the time and has not yet chosen, will be given time to choose, but the teams after it in NFL Draft order can pick first if they are ready. Compensatory picks There is a stage of the NFL Draft called “Compensatory picks”. After the selections for each team, also there are 32 Compensatory picks, Which Are Spread out over three to seven rounds. This pick are used only at the end of each round if its necessary, and help those teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained in free agency in the previous season. To determine these picks is used an special formula, and based on the results, the Compensatory picks will be assigned, For this reason, teams can not negotiate their Compensatory picks. There are times when the 32 picks are not used, when this happens, what is done is the remaining picks are saved for the final draft, and are distributed in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft. The name given to these remaining picks is: “Supplemental Compensatory selections”. Forfeiting picks If the league rules are violated, the NFL is in full right to penalize a team. If a team is penalized, it may be forced to resign to any draft pick. In those cases, the NFL is who takes the decisions, and therefore each team should clearly know the rules of the project from start to avoid disappointments. Supplemental draft For those players who could not applied for NFL draft, there is a time after, in which you can declare for a supplementary Draft. This event is held in the summer, but it is rarely used by players. The rules of this draft supplementary are a bit different from the normal event, but teams have the chance to choice in the same order of the regular draft. |
